James Lee

Born 7 October 1866, living at 3 Coleman Street, London, & baptised on 19 October 1866. In the 1871 census he's age 4, living with his parents James and Mary, brothers William (20), John (10) & Edward (7), and sister Ann (13). By 1881 his father has left/died, he's working as an office boy, and living at 2 Star Street, Shadwell, with his mother & brothers John and Edward.

On 8 May 1887 he married Eliza Louisa Hilliard, a widow 16 years older, at St Thomas's Church Bethnal Green, Middlesex. Eliza's husband John Hilliard died around January 1887. They lived at 46 Long Street, Bethnal Green; James was working as a 'sampler'; his wife was a greengrocer.

In the 1891 census he's living at Eastfield Street, Limehouse, Tower Hamlets with his wife, their 11 month old son James William Lee, and four step-children: Alfred Hilliard (9), Edward Hilliard (13), Eliza Hilliard (16), & Charles Hilliard (14).

By the 1901 census the family have moved to 13 Farringdon Road, Tottenham, only one of Eliza's children is with them (Alfred), his daughter Susan is 7 years old, and James 10. James & his step-son Alfred are general labourers.

In the 1911 census James was a wharf labourer, working with his daughter Susan, a coffee picker, for a wharfinger, while his son James was a railway clerk. The census notes one of Eliza's children has died, presumably Emily. The family was living at 90 Greenhill Grove, Manor Park, Essex.

He was still living at 90 Greenhill Grove, working as a road sweeper, when his wife died on 5 September 1919.
