Biography of John Harding

Born around 1784 in Otterton, Devon, to parents Robert & Mary Harding.

John married Mary Hellier on 17 December 1806 at Colaton Raleigh, Devon. They had 13 children. According to the 1841 census his wife Mary (52, charwoman) is in the Otterton Poor House with 3 of their children: Elizabeth (19, lacemaker), Hannah (12) & Alfred (9); there is no record for John.

In the 1861 census John (78) is living at The Green, Otterton, Devon with his daughter Elizabeth (39, lacemaker) and her husband Richard Lane (46), together with their children John (10), Mary (7), Martha (4) & Caroline (2), and Richard's nieces Mary Ann Harding (17, lacemaker) & Mary Ann Troake (19, lacemaker).

John died at Otterton on 9 June 1865 age 81.
