Biography of William Joyce

William was born about 1822 at Shenfield, Essex. In the 1841 census he's age 18, living in Great Burstead, Billericay, Essex with his parents Samuel & Mary, brothers George (20), John (4), & Thomas (7 months), and sisters Jane (11), Mary (7), & Emma (2), and a lodger/worker Elisha Willy (35).

On 3 April 1847 he married Elizabeth Hartnup in Camberwell, Surrey. He was living on Surrey Canal Bridge, Camberwell. A husbandman in August 1856, and a labourer in 1877.

In the 1861 census he's age 37, living with his wife, daughters Sarah (15), Elizabeth (8), Thirza (2), and son William (5). By 1871 he's age 47, living with his wife, daughter Thirza (13), sons Charles (23), William (16) & Herbert (6), with a lodger John Holbrook (70).

In the 1881 census he's 60, living at Alfred Road, 3 Crows Cottage, Brentwood, with his wife Elizabeth and Herbert (18, blacksmith).
