Biography of Elizabeth Joyce (Elizabeth Hartnup)
Elizabeth was born in Peckham, and baptised 15 September 1822. She married William Joyce, a farm labourer, on 3 April 1847 at the District Church of Christchurch, Camberwell, Surrey.
On 22 May 1848 an examination by St Matthew Bethnal Green Poor Law Union recorded: "Elizabeth Joyce, 9 Upper Norfolk Street, age 24, wife of William Joyce now sick age 25 at same place labourer. 12 months there came from Mr Morgans(?) Old Kent Road. Married at the District Church of Christ Church in the Parish of Camberwell, Surrey (certificate provided) on 3 April 1847. Child by him Sarah age 6 months. Father Samuel Joyce lives at Shenfield a farmers labourer. Ought to be assisted see Mrs Ganon(?) in last book folio 185."
In the 1851 census she's age 27, living in Great Burstead Workhouse, Billericay, Essex, with her daughter Sarah (4) & son Charles (2). Her husband is not with her.
By 1861 she's living with her husband William (37), daughters Sarah (15), Elizabeth (8) & Thurza (2), & son William (5) in Shenfield, Essex. In the 1871 census she's living with her husband William (37), daughter Thurza (13), sons Charles (23), William (16), Herbert (6), and a lodger John Holbrook, in Shenfield, Essex. By 1881 she's with her husband William (60) and son Herbert (18), at 3 Crows Cotts, Alfred Road, Brentwood, Essex.
Elizabeth died age 67, and was buried on 6 February 1890 at Shenfield.
