Biography of Ethel May Spurgeon

Ethel May Spurgeon

Born on 1 December 1880. In the 1881 census Ethel is 4 months old, living with her parents Robert (24) and Sarah (22), brother Cecil (2) and a servant (Emma Rhodes, 13) at 6 Goldworth's Buildings, Bishopgate Street, in the parish of St Peters, Norwich.

Between 1881 and 1884 the family moved to Besthorpe, near Attleborough, Norfolk, where her sister Catherine was born and died 9 months later. In 1885 the family fell on hard times, and it seems Ethel went to live with her Aunt Charlotte in Marylebone, London (see 1891 census) when her parents moved from Norfolk to Battersea.

Age 26, on 12 April 1907 she sailed with her brother Cecil from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, arriving on 19 April 1907. The following year she married Gus Steinhauser at Alameda, California, a chef and later a restauranteur. They had no children.
