Biography of Arthur Frederick Spurgeon

Arthur was born in Enfield, Middlesex on 31 December 1894, and baptised (with Charles) on 12 May 1895, when the family was living at 2 A Block, Old Street, Shoreditch, London. In 1901 he was living with his parents Robert & Sarah, 4 brothers (George, Walter, Charles & Harold) & 2 sisters (Hilda & Winnie), at 63 Whitestile Road, Brentford, London. At age 16 he was a grocers errand boy.
He travelled to the USA via Canada, crossing into the USA at Detroit on 24 June 1913. But he soon returned home and joined the 13th Battalion (Princess Louise's Kensington Battalion) in July 1915. He was with Charles & Harold fighting with the Allies in France: see the San Francisco Bulletin, 28 May 1916. At the end of the war he was Acting Sergeant, and awarded service medals.
After the war he retured to Whitestile Road with Harold (most of his family emigrated to the USA before or during WWI). In 1925 he married Violet Mays at Little Ilford, St Mary The Virgin, Essex, and they had 3 children: Darrell, Ian & Gillian.
On 29 April 1951 Arthur & his wife Violet flew with his sister Winnie & brother Harold from London to New York, visiting relatives in California. They returned home on 1 June 1951. At this time they were living at 48 Mighell Avenue, Ilford, Essex. Later they moved to 2 Parham Court Grand Avenue, Worthing, where he died in 1965.
