Biography of James Tooth

Born 1845 to parents John (a private in 49th Regiment of Foot) & Mary Ann, baptised 14 April 1850 in Atworth, Wiltshire. In the 1851 census he's visiting his grandfather John's family (grandmother Ann, & her children James, Robert, Amelia & Matilda) at Limpsfield with his mother, presumably because his father was posted elsewhere.

In the 1861 census he's 15 years old, living in Edinburgh Castle with his parents John (41) & Mary Ann (40), sisters Phoebe (9), Jane (5), Charlotte (4), Amelia (1) & brother Edward (7).

He married Jane Teresa Hughes 10 July 1865, living at 3 Willow Street, Westminster; his profession (& his father John) given as 'gun maker'. The same year he enlisted with the Corps of Armour.

His first daughter Amy was born in Aldershot; the other 2 daughters Ethel & Phoebe were both born in Poona, Bombay, India, where he had been posted.

When James was discharged on 5 May 1889 from the Corps of Armour he was Staff Armourer Sergeant. It seems likely he stayed in India with his family until around 1910.

Probate records that he died at sea on 29 May 1910; his last address was 22 Ridge Road, Stroud Green, Middlesex.

After his death his daughter Amy recorded his profession as a Master Armourer (see her marriage certificate with Charles Ball).
