Biography of Jane Nichols (Jane Gregory)
Jane was born on 28 Aug 1846 at Devizes, Wiltshire to parents George & Dorcas Gregory, and baptised on 21 March 1847 in the Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel, Devizes.
In the 1851 census she's 4, living with her parents George (30, a printers compositor) & Dorcas (35), sister Henrietta (6) & brother Frederick (5 months). By 1861 she's 14, a housemaid living & working at Bellvue Lunatic Asylum, Devizes.
Jane married Frederick Nichols on 2 June 1867 at St Luke, Finsbury, Islington, London. They had 4 children: Alice, Frederick, George, & Lilian.
In the 1871 census she's 24, a shopkeeper, living at 5 Milton Street, Finsbury, London with her husband Frederick (28, warehouse porter) and their daughter Alice (2). Later the family move to Battersea, London, and then to 8 Murray Street, Hoxton, London.
Her husband died 10 January 1878, age 35, a couple of months after the birth of their daughter Lilian. In the 1881 census she's 34, a linen mangler, still living at 8 Murray Street with her daughters Alice (12) & Lilian (2), sons Frederick (8) & George (5), & two lodgers: William Sanderson (30, stone mason) & Amy Baker (26, cap maker).
By 1891 she's 44, a clothes mangler, still living at 8 Murray Street, with her daughters Alice (22, a jewel case coverer) & Lilian (13), sons Frederick (18, a telephone operator) & George (15, a trimming makers assistant).
In the 1901 census she's 54, living at 5 Albion Square, Stoke Newington, London with her daughter Alice (32) & son-in-law Robert (32, a laundry proprietor), & their daughter Dorothy (5). By 1911 she's 64, living at 124 Highbury Hill, London with her son Frederick (38, a launderer) & his wife Rosa (39), their children Harold (12), Ivy (9) & Winifred (2), & a servant (Dora Wade, 21).
Jane died on 22 November 1913 age 67, and was buried in Islington, London on 27 November 1913.
