Biography of William Vince

William Vince

William was born on 12 September 1822 in Little Ellingham, Norfolk, England, and baptised on 29 September 1822. He trained as a master tailor. In the 1851 census, age 29, he was a lodger with John & Sarah Barker living in Market Street, Shipdham.

On 24 October 1856 William married Hannah Maria Meacham, a dressmaker from Shipdham, Norfolk. Their first two children died when babies. By 1861 they were living in Chapel Street, Shipdham, Norfolk with their third baby, Walter.

In the 1871 census he's an inn-keeper (and tailor), living at the Swan Inn, Market Street, Shipdham, with his wife Hannah, sons Walter (10) & William (5), daughters Margaret (7) & Alice (3), cousin Charlotte Pease (domestic servant), & lodgers Joseph & James Matthews (cattle drovers).

By 1881 the family have moved to Excelsior Cottage, Shipdham and they now had five children: Walter (20, harness makers apprentice), Margaret (17, fathers help), William (15, farmers boy), Alice (13) and Annie (4).

In the 1891 census he's living at 7 Church Close, Shipdham, with his daughter Annie (16) and a lodger (Henry Chapman, a farm labourer). His wife is living with her widowed brother-in-law John Vince and her daughter Alice (20, housekeeper) in the parish of Pulham St Mary Magdalene, Norfolk.

He died on 1 April 1898 and was buried at Shipdham on 5 April 1898.
