Biography of James High

Ellen Heyhow and James High

Born 10 July 1853 in Reedham, Norfolk to parents James & Ann, & baptised 7 August 1853.

In the 1861 census he's living with his parents 'on the hill' at Reedham, together with 4 sisters (Hannah, Ellen, Harriet & Sarah), and 2 lodgers. His mother died in 1868; in 1870 his father remarried & by 1871 James is living with his grandfather James, grandmother Charlotte, & lodger Robert Lake.

Age 27 he married Ellen Hayhow on 4 April 1881 at King Street Congregational Chapel, Great Yarmouth. They had 2 children, Edward & Catherine.

In the 1881 census he's a lodger living at 5 Charlotte Terrace, Camden Road, Great Yarmouth, working as an Attendant for lunatics at the Royal Naval Hospital. By 1891 he's at 52 Havelock Road, Great Yarmouth, still an Attendant. It seems he needed to live near the hospital, as his wife and children lived elsewhere in Great Yarmouth.

In the 1901 census he's Chief Attendant on Lunatics at the Royal Naval Hospital, Queen's Road, Great Yarmouth, and remained Chief Attendant in 1911. The Royal Naval Hospital census for 1901 & 1911 record James High as Chief Atendant on Lunatics.
