Biography of Martha Anna Carpenter (nee Martha Anna Harding)

Born 30 November 1867 & baptised privately on 21 December 1867 & publikly (sic) on 12 January 1868 at Compton Bishop, Somerset to parents Thomas & Mary Harding. In the 1871 census age 3, she's living at Faringdon, Lechlade, Gloustershire with her parents Thomas (51) & Mary (43), and brother Gilbert (8). By 1881 she's living with her mother at 1 North Street, Lingfield, Surrey - it's not clear where her father is at this time.

Martha married Charles Carpenter on 20 December 1885 while living with her brother Gilbert & his wife Ella at 107 Pembroke Road, Kilburn, Middlesex.

By 1889 the family had moved to 69 Golborne Road, Kensington (see Nellie's birth certificate). In the 1891 census Martha (23) is living at 61 Wellington Road, Paddington with husband Charles (28) and daughters Mary (4), & Nellie (1).

In the 1901 census Martha (33) is living at 27 Albert Road, Paddington with husband Charles (38, packer in a general warehouse) and daughters Mary (14), Nellie (11), Winifred (9) & Martha (6).

Her husband died on 21 November 1910, age 48. In the 1911 census Martha (43) is living at 39 Buckingham Road, Willesden, London with daughters Mary (24), Nellie (21), Winifred (19) & Martha (16), and a lodger Henry Jones (28). All four (unmarried) daughters are dressmakers.

In 1939 Martha (72, incapacitated) is living with her daughters Martha Field (45) & Winifred (48, an instrument examiner & packer of precision instrument clocks), and her son-in-law Fred Field (47, railway carter & heavy worker) at 39 Buckingham Road, Willesden, London.

Martha died on 14 August 1942 age 74.
