Charles Spurgeon, 1952

Born in Clerkenwell, London on 11 November 1892. Baptised later (with Arthur) on 12 May 1895, when the family was living at 2A Block, Old Street, Shoreditch, London. In the 1901 census (part 1,part 2) Charles is living at 3 York Road, Old Brentford with his parents Robert & Sarah, 5 brothers: Cecil (22), Sidney (18), Walter (10), Arthur (6), & Harold (5), sister Hilda (2), and a servant. By 1911, age 17 & working as a grocers assistant, he was living at 63 Whitestile Road, Brentford with his parents, 4 brothers: George (24), Walter (19), Arthur (16), & Harold (14), & two sisters: Hilda (12) & Winnie (9).

He planned to sail with his family to New York on 8th December 1915, but perhaps was enlisted, and instead joined Arthur & Harold fighting with the Allies in France: see the San Francisco Bulletin, 28 May 1916.

After the war he emigrated to the USA, travelling from Liverpool (20 April 1920) to New York on the SS Vasari with his brother Harold, arriving 4 May 1920. He married Gladys Randall on 19 October 1930, and settled in Sacramento, California. He owned the Motor Inn Garage, and lived in Sacremento for nearly 50 years (see the Sacremento Bee orbituary). He died 18 September 1970 age 77.
