Spurgeons emigration to USA during 1st World War

SS Philadelphia (formerly SS City of Paris)

In 1899, after grounding on rocks off the coast of Cornwall, the SS Paris was rebuilt (with only two funnels) and renamed SS Philadelphia.

By 1907, Robert Walter Spurgeon's three eldest children, Sidney, Ethel & Cecil had already emigrated to California. George married on 14 November 1915, and stayed in England.

Robert (69), his wife Sarah (54), their daughters Hilda (16) & Winifred (13), & son Charles (23), left home at 37 Devonshire Place, London, and on 8 December 1915 boarded the SS Philedelphia. Sailing from Liverpool they arriving at New York on 16 December 1915 and settled in California.
